Fuji x100 firmware update instructions
Ah, Fuji. And that was ! The sad thing is that software cannot fix the X's main weakness: that the lens is very soft when wide open, especially when focussed close.
This is stated clearly in the DPReview review and is evident in the review's photo of a little girl, whose face is not sharp even though in the centre of the picture. What is the point of having a f2. The main use of f2. In my opinion the X fails in this respect.
It seems that Fuji gave keeping the lens small priority over being sharp. Not true at all. At macro range, the X is soft at F2. However, at normal portrait range, the F2 is very good. Stop it down to F2.
Moreover, with an equivalent focal length of 35mm, the focal length itself is not designed for close up head only portraits. Lastly, 35mm is not going to get super shallow DOF unless you get really close to the subject and the background is far enough. And for portraits, you don't want to do that anyway with a 35mm lens, because 35mm is going to distort the face at close ups.
No, I haven't bought one but I love the X concept. I agree that we would not normally use 35mm equivalent for head only portraits. I am talking of environmental portraits please take a look at the example of the little girl in the DP review.
A technical point. DOF depends on image size. The depth of field with a 35mm lens is the same as that with a 90mm lens if the camera to subject distance is changed so that the subject occupies the same fraction of the image. So the depth of field at f2. I agree of course this may well make the nose too prominent.
Trashing a camera you don't own, have no experience with and have no intention of buying is the definition of a troll. It would seem you don't even own the camera, ok I have owned the X for exactly one month to date. I have had it in tow on 6 assignments in everything from starlight to Dutch Master's light. In fact it is actually decent in the corners if the object falls within the focal plane due to curvature of field.
Even the starlight shots showed comparable sharpness and coma to a good full frame lens from Nikon or Canon, with good contrast too. It's No Leica or Nikon 35 1. You know, the kind where the light is striking. Then and only then will you see what any lens is capable of I am sorry if I offended. As a said, I love the concept and want to love the implementation but have been concerned about the statements I read in the DP review and elsewhere about the lens being soft in some situations.
Yes, my comments are not based on personal experience, but are based on what I take to be a reputable review. I am pleased that some here are disputing DPReview's findings as I want the camera to be a success. This quote is incorrect: "A technical point. Of course, that would require an f0. As it stands, the 35mm equivalent f2. The X looks like a sweet camera, but not one I'd choose for portraits.
I don't have it, or any fuji camera for that matter! Desperately need advice Hi I have a mac and for some reason the computer does not recognize the camera when it is attached. What I did was use a usb sd card reader, move the firmware update onto the card via the reader, then put the card into the camera.
Make sure the card has been formatted and that there is no other information on the card. Also refer back the instructions on the fujifilm website before updating. The whole process takes about 40 seconds once started, so have the battery fully charged. It is worth updating. A big step forward though no fix for the shutter opening and closing when in bright sunlight which really slows the camera down.
The update procedure posted by Fuji seems unnecessarily convoluted. DAT directly to the SD card using a card reader - rather than running the update program from the computer to make this transfer? I'm on a Mac. Wonder if they're just being too obtuse Yes, you can. Not sure about the writing speed, but startup speed from sleep is still there. But sleep still slow. And at least this update won't yack and spit like Sony's a55 Firmware v2, just because of a bit kernal.
Stuff like this nonsense makes me wish people wouldn't early adopt, in order to force manufacturers to put out reasonably completed products, not use paying customers as testers whom they don't listen to. This doesn't make sense. Engineers can only think so much. They are not the s of users out there. You need outside input. I agree they should do more field testing -- some of the original software flaws were pretty obvious and should have been caught before going to production.
On the other hand, you can't say they don't listen to their customers. For me there are still three important fixes to be made, more important that shutter sounds and such 1- Assignable Raw button for ND filter 2- Correct the Hyperfocal DOF values for those of a 23mm now 35mm 3- Improve MF ring behaviour, specially in low light situations now need tens of turns With this improvements I would be done; anyway, is good that updates are coming.
This was pretty fast, and made some good repairs. I don't think I'd count too much on feature add so quickly. I was waiting for this firmware upgrade to see if it addressed the concerns that have held me back from buying the X And it doesn't. Agree of course that it should be programmable. They also combined it with an excellent Auto-DR option for protecting highlights, and incredible high-ISO performance and excellent noise quality when it does finally appear.
The jpg engine so good that it's almost impossible to get results as good from any of the major RAW converters and takes a ton of work. There's no point. Stupid Fuji putting their best engineers on their jpg engine. What could they have been thinking?
At the end I just use jpeg fine. Like Gava said, X produces very good images in jpeg format If you shoot using RAW and also happen to use the film simulation modes then the camera remembers the settings you have chosen if you then process to jpg using the RAW button in playback mode.
With a wifi enabled memory card which automatically uploads jpgs, you end up with a very effective way to shoot raw, process on the fly and upload moderately edited files. It's a nice system. The MF ring speed is still slow, but the AF is much improved in low light. Between that and the ISO consistency from mode to mode, I am pretty happy. Yup, I'm pleased too. ISO consistency was the biggest issue for me and it's fixed. Of course there are still problems left, but I can wait for those fixes.
Yea I also wanna know about the AF improved I thought it is in my head I didn't want to say it, as the engineers from Fuji must be laughing if they see this and had not done anything to improve AF performance yet The MF ring is much more responsive for me. Definitely not my imagination - 3 turns. Perhaps it's speed-dependent now. After spending more time using the camera with 1.
I can confirm I'm still having the same issue when attempting to focus on objects when there is a brighter light source around, especially in Macro mode.
What I do is I use the AFL button to speed up focusing in M mode, so that I don't have to turn the focus ring times to focus on an object. I find the same thing Moresi does. Seems like focus would go faster, skips from 10 ft to 6 ft e. However, it does not do it when I tried doing the same thing when the room is not bright. It means when I press the AFL button in Macro mode, the camera tends to search for something to focus but cannot.
It is almost like the camera is trying to pick something close to the light source to focus on, could not focus on the subject sitting within 15cm. Ended up rotating the ring times to focus. Good improvements, but i bet we'll see a whole flood of people throwing tantrums because its doesnt have everything they wanted. As an early owner of the X10 I feel left out when reading this, especially when I see all the out of focus pics from my recent trip to Greece. When is Fujifilm going to give us the benefit of their AF improvements for their other models?!! I still have the X10 "orbs-original" and can not confirm that: With the focus I have no problems. I sympathise! My X10 produces a surprisingly large number of out-of-focus shots - seems to be a completely random phenomenon, as far as I can see.
That's customer service!!! Waiting for the organic sensor next year! Keep it up Fuji, u r the best!! The only one who really care for your customers and u r producing excellent cameras with excellent picture quality which is close to film camera quality.
I am a Sony a77 and Fuji x20 user. Unfortunately they make them worse each time, but it's the thought that counts. Isn't it? I agree this is really good to see. Alas, the only hope now for upgrades to this camera is Magic Lantern. Thanks Fuji, as a former X owner, and now Xs owner, I appreciate the dedication you have for your customers, hope this will continue for future camera generations. I wonder when Nikon will update the firmware on my D3s Soon I hope Waiting for one D3X that I have, is better lying down and sleeping, longer even think about it As a fellow Nikon owner, it's clear that Nikon doesn't have the same commitment to excellence as Fuji.
