He was fairly big but should have been huge. He was among many things an extraordinary soul-singer. Great artist. Bemagnus , Sep 30, Paul W and art like this. With no band to call his own, the talented Scot had been obliged to co-opt Procol Harum, then at a relatively low commercial ebb, as an occasional instrumental unit.

Sadly, little recorded evidence of that collaboration has surfaced, though tapes of a set from the Rainbow Theatre in March are gathering dust on the shelf.

He was recommended by Robin Trower, who had recently been auditioning drummers for his eponymous power trio. Frankie commented that it was only music that had saved him that kind of fate and dedicated the album to the plight of prisoners. The pair had attempted to put a band together two years previously but gave up after ten months of writing, rehearsing and recording. When you come here you can finally associate the real thing with the words that people use.

It was written in New Orleans. My notes, were never ever done Despite never rising higher than second on the bill, they blew the likes of Quicksilver Messenger Service off stage.

I've just spent a happy few hours wandering through them. They seem to have been uploaded by someone with access to original BBC tapes, really good quality. I have all three of the concert recordings from original broadcasts and repeats on the BBC, but the Spotify ones differ in track listings and order, so there's a voyage of discovery waiting there.

My off-air tapes from the sessions of and have suffered over the years, and it was great to hear them in quality again. Paul W likes this. Location: jackson MI. And it was an impressive one indeed. Ray Russell on electric guitar was a highly-rated session player, while Irish bassist Chrissie Stewart had appeared on both of the previous two albums. A hard-working two-man horn section of Chris Mercer and Martin Drover added no fewer than four instruments between them — tenor and baritone saxes, trumpet and flugelhorn.

But perhaps the most impressive recruit of all was Sheffield-born keyboardist and vocalist Paul Carrack. Its release in April would put for their fans. But it was, of course, Frankie Miller who was squarely centre stage in what was clearly intended by record company Chrysalis as the album to launch him in the States. Joe Cocker, a similar kind of blues-influenced singer, had done well early in the decade, but on the back of extensive touring — and Frankie realised he, too, would have to become familiar with the turnpikes and freeways of the land of the free.

When you come here you can finally associate the real thing with the words people use. He preferred to headline smaller venues, clubs like the Roxy and the Bottom Line, where there was more audience contact and he could be certain they had come to appreciate his unique brand of blues-rock music. Both have an AOR adult oriented rock feel to them that suggest they were aimed towards the American airwaves. A fine track to end the vinyl side one which could only have been improved by more prominent horns.

This was a track that dated back to the days in when Miller and Fraser had attempted to form a band together but abandoned the concept, leaving a treasure trove of songs to plunder separately. Indeed, Fraser had included his version on his own first solo album and it makes an interesting comparison. The comments of Chris Mercer who played tenor and baritone sax on this album offer an insight into recording industry in the s.

The album was produced by Jack Douglas from New York, which was typical of the era when record companies hired 'hot' producers, regardless of their feel for the music being created. A tragic exception of course was the wonderful album Frankie made with Allen Toussaint, which never got the recognition but was the right thing to have done.

Certainly, both band and songs were even better live, as Steve Simpson of sometime opening act Meal Ticket confirms.
