Chess has a tutorial mode which I highly recommend you do. I have played chess most of my life, but I still jumped into this mode here. It will spend some time teaching you the basics of chess which is great, especially for those, not all that familiar with chess.

However, it also teaches you how to play this game which is a bit of a learning curve. I would wager that you will have much more fun with this game in the long term if you take the time to play the tutorial. I get that a game like Battle vs. Chess or if you want to call it its lame name, Check vs. Mate is not going to be for everyone. I though did have some fun with this. I am a fan of the game of chess and the fantasy almost heavy metal style that the game has clicked with me and got me invested more than I thought it would.

However, Gold and Silver aren't recolors of each other because they have a different shape. Same with black and white. Another option is Battlegrounds, which is rule-bended version where every capture, or checkmate involves a fight where if a defender wins, the attacker gives up the capture, or in the case of a checkmate, disappears from the board.

There are 2 old sub-modes and 1 new sub-mode in Battlegrounds mode, Normal, Slasher, and the new one, Turn based. Normal involves arrows pointed in different directions falling into aa black circle on the bottom left if as white or bottom right as black. Click the D-Pad on the same direction as the arrow points as soon as it touches the black circle in order to attack.

If you do the wrong D-Pad direction, or if you do it at the wrong timing, the opponents piece attacks instead.
